Abstract
Over and over the future of foreign newsgathering is described in terms of a Darwinian drama. “While there are still correspondents based abroad,�? noted former foreign correspondent and media critic Marvin Kalb (1990, xiv), “the genre known as ‘foreign correspondent’ is becoming extinct.�? Peter Arnett (1998, 52), the longtime correspondent for CNN and the Associated Press (AP), is no less climactic: “International news coverage in most of America’s mainstream papers has almost reached the vanishing point�?.
