Abstract
The Louisiana Graduate Network in Applied Evolution (LAGNiAppE) is a post-baccalaureate program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and hosted by the LSU Department of Biological Sciences. In its second year, the program provides recent college graduates with a structured, immersive research experience designed to prepare them for graduate education and careers in STEM. This report presents findings from the 2024–2025 program year (cohort 2) and is based on comprehensive evaluation data collected from Scholars, mentors, and co-mentors. The 2024–2025 cohort engaged in a wide range of activities, including intensive bootcamp training, independent research projects, scientific presentations, weekly seminars, and professional development workshops. Informed on Year 1 evaluation feedback, several program modifications were introduced, including earlier lab placements, refined use of Individual Development Plans (IDPs), enhanced graduate school preparation, and the implementation of mentor training using the CIMER model. LAGNiAppE continues to offer a meaningful and fruitful research experience for aspiring STEM scholars, equipping them with skills, confidence, and a community to advance their scientific careers. Based on the factors examined in this evaluation and the short timeframe, the LAGNiAppE program was generally successful. Some minor refinements may better enhance the impact of this program for the next cohort of Scholars, mentors, and co-mentors.
