Abstract
Ample research has explored the impact of fandom, including fan identities associated with sports, music, and film. The social identity formed over time is linked to cultural and ritualistic practices, social prestige, capital, and self-esteem. While much research has focused on understanding fan communities, less attention has been given to empirical connections between their cognitive and affective factors. Studies exploring predictors and psychological impacts of fan memberships, such as self-esteem and belongingness, often overlook BIPOC fans. Fan identity may yield different psychological outcomes than racial identity. This chapter advances understanding by examining media effects and fandom among underrepresented and marginalized racial/ethnic group members.
