Abstract
While other scholars have mined Edward Cave (1691–1754) and his seminal magazine for insights into British masculinity, cultural history, and the daily economic realities of the emerging middle class, this study looks at how Cave described and defended his work as the entrepreneurial author and publisher of one of the earliest modern magazines, the Gentleman’s Magazine. As a project, this study looks both at the magazine’s curation practices and at the language used to describe its work as essential for national civic discourse, drawing from a close reading of the magazine itself over several decades in the first third of the eighteenth century and placing Cave’s work in critical context.
