Abstract

This paper deals with the reactive power decomposition into a 'capacitive reactive power' and a 'residual reactive power', which is proposed by Kusters and Moore and recommended by Int. Electr. Commission. The paper shows that in practical power systems, these powers do not possess properties which are attributed to them. In particular, the 'capacitive reactive power' compensation does not result in the highest value of the source power-factor which is attainable at the capacitive compensation. Also, it does not hold true that the 'residual reactive power' cannot be compensated by a passive branch. Therefore, the decomposition proposed does not result in the adequate and useful model of the power transmission in nonsinusoidal systems.
