Abstract
An investigation was made on a direct synthetic route to star polymers containing peptide arms because of the thermotropic and lyotropic properties exhibited by poly(γ-alkyl substituted-α, L-glutamates). A unique hydrophobic semi-rigid rod is created from the peptide α-helix, which imparts rod-like character to the macromolecule, coupled with the long aliphatic side chains emanating from the repeat units. These polypeptides exhibit low melt transitions and high solubility in common organic solvents.
