Abstract
Several quaternary ammonium salts, based on ethanolamine and diethanolamine, bearing C10 and C12 alkyl chains were synthesized comparatively with the corresponding amides. Smectictype liquid crystal properties were observed only for the quaternary ammonium salts with either one or two C12 alkyl groups.
