Abstract
Alkylammonium salts of iodide type in which the number of the methylene groups in the long alkyl chain is 8, 10, 12, 16 and 18, were prepared and characterized. Thermal and mesogenic properties were assessed by means of differential thermal analysis (DTA), IR spectroscopy and polarizing microscopy. All amphiphilic structures exhibited a thermotropic smectic mesophase only upon subsequently cooling.
