Abstract
For a number of medical conditions as well as weight status, an assessment of nutritional status can provide valuable information to direct treatment efforts. In the context of the seemingly constant increase in obesity, it is more important than ever to assess these individuals in the healthcare setting. A thorough nutrition assessment will enable the healthcare professional to craft a treatment plan that includes reduction of energy intake and/or increased physical activity to encourage weight loss. Efforts to do this successfully are not without challenges in the determination of dietary intakes since there does not appear now, or perhaps ever, a gold standard to enlighten the researcher to what individuals actually eat. Given the challenges, it is still important to address diet and nutrient intake realizing that there are poor diets observed at all age groups within the life cycle. Including body mass index, body composition, and routine laboratory testing help to supplement dietary information assessed, with the end objective to provide further insight into the needs of the individual and how best to recommend appropriate treatment. This chapter will delve into many essential factors critical to nutrition assessment.
