Abstract
The benefits of portable sensor systems for aerospace applications such as aircraft structural health monitoring and explosive detection are discussed. Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is used by the transportation security administration for detecting explosives and contraband narcotics at airports. Its superior performance and design features allowed to produce a hand-held, battery-powered detector for weapons of mass destruction (WMD). A prototype hand-held fatigue sensor provide in-situ structural health monitoring of aircraft wing struts, girders, turbine blades and other devices.
