Abstract
Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV.Tospovirus) was detected in tomatillo (Physalis ixocarpa) plants, with symptoms of leaf spots, wilting, and generalized necrosis, grown in the states of México, Puebla and Morelos. Symptoms' expression in susceptible hosts indicated the possible presence of strains of this virus. The isolates of TSWV were identified as belonging to the group of localized lesion pathogens (TSWV-PL), the less pathogenic of the pathogroup, for they induced necrotic ring spots on and abscission of inoculated leaves, with no systemic movement, only in the C. chinense Jacquin PI-152225 and PI-159236 lines, both resistant to TSWV. The PL pathogroup of TSWV is probably the most common in México, due to the phenotypic behavior (localized lesions) of the isolates of TSWV on C. chinense.
