Abstract
A mixed-mode nuclear shell-model for systems where there is competition between two or more principle modes is considered. The theory is applied to 24Mg where, respectively, the deformation-driving quadrupole and spin-orbit interactions dominate the dynamics. The theory is also used to explore the X(5) symmetry along the U(5) ↔ SU(3) leg of the Casten Triangle of the Interacting Boson Model. The results suggest that the mixed-mode concept can be used to track the dynamics of a nuclear system that is driven by competing modes.
