Abstract
We obtain the dimensions R, electron density distributions nA (r→), and total ground-state binding energies E of atoms and positive ions (nuclear charge Z, N electrons) in intense magnetic fields. A variationally formulated Thomas-Fermi-like model is valid for Z43a10-9Ba10Z3 G; the choice n(r→)∼ZR-3σ-14exp(-σ), σar2R2, gives Ea-150(B1012)25Z95 eV, for neutral atoms. A crude variational calculation, valid for Ba1010Z3, gives Ea-13.6NA (Z-13N)2ln2(2B1010) eV. © 1971 The American Physical Society.
