Abstract

The goal of this chapter is to provide an applied overview of public sector compensation practices and address developing trends in the field. The chapter begins with a description of common salary and wage setting processes and a discussion of the role of non-wage benefits in overall compensation systems. The chapter then addresses the unique context of public sector compensation systems and provides a summary overview of contemporary trends impacting the field. Last, the chapter outlines an agenda for further advancing research in the field.
