Abstract

The above-mentioned publication contains an erroneous calculation of flushing times using Eq. 1 in the paper. In the published version, we report flushing times as follows: “According to Eq. 1, flushing times associated with the BCS openings were 45 and 54 days for the first and second openings in 2019, respectively.” In the Discussion section, flushing time is erroneously reported as 51 days. These errors arose from a mistake in calculating the tidal prism of Lake Pontchartrain. In the published version, a data entry mistake in a spreadsheet formula led to 6 km2 being used for the area of Lake Pontchartrain when in reality it is 1600 km2. This resulted in incorrect values. This erratum corrects this mistake by reporting that: According to Eq. 1, flushing times associated with the BCS openings were 15.3 and 16.2 days for the first and second openings in 2019, respectively. The correction obviously lowers the reported flushing times for the spillway openings. The conclusion arising from the paper, however, remains unchanged. The spillway openings significantly decrease average flushing times, and local conditions can vary significantly and lead to long residence times. It is also useful to note that the correctly calculated flushing times more closely align with those by Huang et al. (2020) predicted by numerical modeling (25 days).
