Abstract
To improve the heat efficiency at higher operation temperature in turbines and engines, the thermal barrier coatings which have elevated melting temperature, higher oxidation and corrosion resistance get more and more researchers' interest. A unique and patented thermal barrier coating material is made up of zirconia, gadolinia, ytterbia and yttria. And it is used in combustors, transition ducts, blades and vane airfoils for its lower thermal conductivity and improved high temperature sintering resistance. In order to get more detailed understanding about this coating material's mechanical and electronic structure properties, we used the first principles density functional theory based method in our simulation and studied the bulk modulus and electronic structure.
