Abstract

A discussion of grease life in ball bearings covers the effect of temperatures; selection of gelling agents; difficulties in selecting an appropriate grease; setting up an effective regreasiug schedule; oxidation-inhibiting additives; evaporation rate needed for long life; common agents used to gel the mineral-oil phase, e.g., fatty acid soaps of lithium, calcium, sodium, and aluminum; high-temperature services; oxidation-inhibiting additives; operating grease life that may be expected before encountering 10% of failures in an application; oil viscosity in grease; and life correction factors for demanding conditions.
