Abstract
We present a new method for the design of graded composite structures for strength and stiffness. The method proceeds in two steps. In the first step a new type of relaxed problem is formulated involving effective elastic tensors as well as a new multiscale quantity dubbed the macrostress modulation function. The modulation function quantifies the intensity of local stress uctuations at the scale of the microstructure generated by the imposed macroscopic stress. In the second step the solution of the relaxed problem together with the modulation function is used to identify a graded fiber reinforced microstructure that provides local stress control.
