Abstract
During the period of Dante Alighieri’s life, Europe was in the midst of a transition —evolving from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, or Early Modern Era. However, while predominately associated with the Middle Ages, Dante foreshadowed the upcoming Renaissance in his personal beliefs and his writings, namely his Comedy. This article not only explores both Dante’s life and his Comedy in their respective historical contexts, but also looks at aspects of Comedy and relates it to traits and characteristics commonly associated with the Renaissance and its associated thought and literatures. Moreover, this article argues that while the Comedy is classified as a medieval work of literature, the Comedy is indeed a sort of hybrid work, functioning as a bridge between late-medieval and early-Renaissance literature.
