Abstract

Although tele-neuropsychological assessment (TNP) is increasing in use and has promising validity evidence, specifically for older adults, there are gaps in terms of what types of tests have been previously studied. Tests of visual memory, executive functioning, and everyday functioning are all understudied despite their importance in neuropsychological assessment.  The goal of the current study was to evaluate the validity of tests in these domains administered using TNP. Participants were randomized into either face-to-face (FTF) or TNP testing first and completed two visits approximately two weeks apart. Participants completed testing with visual components (i.e., BVMT-R, D-KEFS CWIT) and everyday functioning (NAB Driving Scenes). A sample of 48 individuals completed neuropsychological testing and a survey on their satisfaction with the modes. Minimal differences were found between FTF and TNP tests visits across tests with some tests showing a preference for FTF (D-KEFS Word Reading) with another showing preference for TNP (BVMT-R Delayed Recall). Results showed that intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were poor to good across tests (ICCs = .554 - .761). Additionally, tests were examined for the effect of mode differences and order effects. Only NAB Driving Scenes demonstrated an effect of order with participants performing more poorly at their second visit if they got TNP first. Participants were highly satisfied with the TNP mode and cited its benefits as limiting travel time. Largely, TNP showed similarity to FTF modes across tests indicating that TNP can be a valid mode used for assessment of older adults neuropsychological functioning.
