Abstract

This collection of poetry and prose is concerned with the technology and tools that mediate how we all engage with land and ecologies. The work is driven by a fascination with how such a wide variety of tools, such as farm equipment, taxonomical language, and smartphones, can dull our perception of the intricacy of ecologies. It asks: what is the cost of using these tools, and what is the value? Canthe tools be considered part of the ecology? The collection draws on many years of farm work in the Pacific Northwest, some years living in southern Louisiana, and a couple months living in a house without electricity in New Orleans, as it searches for strange edges of built and non-built environments, and explores the ways in which separated ecologies and modes of understanding are ever-porous to each other.
