Abstract
These poems inflict even as they are inflicted upon. Touching on the isolation, adaptability, visceral danger, aggressive potential, and vast textual history of queer experience, each poem speaks across space and time to untold affiliates. Among the motifs incorporated are the hard-boiled detective novel, film noir, theoretical physics, and camp wit. Among the strategies utilized (or mimicked) are erasure, repetition, punning, and citation. Among the forms referenced are the play, the novel chapter, the editorial copy on a dust jacket, and offers of sex scrawled on bathroom stall walls. From movie sets to the White House to a wintry afternoon in the suburbs, the settings of the poems would give the book an expansive feeling if it didn’t all feel so claustrophobic, even suffocating. The air supply goes down as the body count goes up.
