Abstract
Set in the future, this novel traces the friendship of three soldiers stationed as peace-keepers in a city divided by religious-based terrorism. The divisions are known as zones and categorized by color—White, Red, and Black. The protagonists are stationed in the White, the most civilized and least dangerous of the three. Their lives are relatively cushy and mundane until one of them vanishes during a bombing on the tenth anniversary of the occupation. The other two set out to find him. The journey takes them into the Red Zone and, finally, the Black, forcing them to confront not only the reality of the world outside their own blockade but also the principles by which they’ve lived their lives as soldiers.
