Abstract
The novel takes place in leprosarium at the turn of the 20th century in Southern Louisiana. The narrator is an apostolic nun who takes care of patients and attends to the general upkeep of the camp. She ruminates on her experiences, describes various visions she undergoes, and attempts to understand the illness that surrounds her. The camp itself consists of a delicate balance of power among patients and the nuns who oversee them. As opposed to a largely chronological narrative, the novel is structured more spatially, rooted in the various structures artifacts of the camp.
