Abstract

This research project is a descriptive study of a hybrid racial community in a rural, non-farm area of Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana. The preparation of this research utilized chiefly primary material, although secondary material was used. The principal sources of data for this study were schedules, interviews, informal conversations, personal observations, attitude inventories, documents, and pertinent published materials.

The scope of the thesis is as follows: (1) the presentation of the historical background of the general area and the people; (2) the population characteristics of the community are analyzed and, when possible, compared to another significant population group; (3) a general survey of the people and of the community; (4) the situations of economy, education, religions, the family, and recreation are presented; (5) an investigation of the attitudes of the people of the community is given; and finally, (6) a study of the Dulac Indian youth is made.

Some of the general findings and conclusions of the study are: (1) the way of life of the Indian people in the Dulac community is relatively simple; (2) a complex pattern of race relationships in the community and parish exists; (3) the population characteristics of the community are influenced by a racial phenomenon; (4) a social stratification pattern has existed throughout most of the history of this community; (5) the educational status of the community's inhabitants is extremely low; (6) educational endeavors of the Methodist Mission school were very helpful in exerting a powerful influence on the Dulac Indians; (7) the family is the most stable institution in the community; (8) the attitudes of the people toward their fellow men are greatly influenced by the racial dilemma which engulfs them; and (9) the present generation seems more tolerant, but desires equal educational and public facilities to those which are offered other people in the parish
