Abstract

This current study included an exploratory component, as well as, a confirmatory component. The exploratory component of the study involved developing an understanding of how children negotiate intersubjectivity during rough-and-tumble play (R&T play). Utilizing participant observation, the researcher described the context and the experiences of children as they jointly negotiated a shared understanding during R&T play. The researcher discovered, in R&T play, a structure and level of shared thinking among participants similar to other types of social play. The confirmatory component of the study involved conducting analyses on certain child characteristics as they related to participation in R&T play episodes. A portion of the findings from this aspect of the study corroborated findings from previous research.
