Abstract
Among advanced musicians who advocate for increasing diversity in classically oriented repertoire, music commissioning is a common practice. Funding a composer to write original music, however, seems out of reach for student musicians or those without the financial means and know-how. A more affordable and therefore accessible alternative to the stand-alone commission is the consortium-based commission for new music. In this lecture portion of a “lecture-recital with written document,” I (a) document my experience in spearheading a new music consortium and, from that experience, (b) present a guide for facilitating a new music consortium.
The project was the impetus for two new works. From this two new works for the trombone repertoire are created. Henry Dorn’s Sonata for Trombone and Piano, takes heavy inspiration from Black music like Motown, R&B, Funk, Gospel, and Jazz. MJ Halco-Haack’s Gray and Gold is meant to evoke the image of an overcast autumn day that also serves as an intermediate level chamber piece for trombone quartet. In creating a guide for facilitating a consortium, a major finding was the need for skillful communication in a multi-faceted communications area.
