Abstract
Education is considered one of the most important tools for success in the labor market. The benefits of education extend to multiple other externalities. However, access to education is not universal even within the same school, county, and state. This dissertation includes three different essays which looks at the literature on intervention programs, an intervention program to increase access to post secondary education, and impact of education on crime. The first chapter investigates the literature on intervention programs, their costs and impacts. It also discusses the literature connecting education and crime. The second chapter details the intervention program studied in this dissertation. The third chapter investigates the impact of the intervention program in the state of Louisiana on post-secondary enrollment rates. The fourth chapter establishes a direct link between education and crime by showing the post secondary education opportunity resulting from the intervention can reduce youth crime.
