Abstract
During ODP Leg 159, January-March 1995, JOIDES Resolution sailed from Dakar, Senegal, to Las Palmas, Canary Islands. Holes were drilled at Sites 959-962. The primary objective for drilling the Cote d'Ivoire-Ghana Transform Margin was to assess the sedimentary and deformational processes that were operative along this continental borderland as a result of the different stages of continental breakup and related transform tectonism. Comparisons with other passive continental margins indicate that the active transform margin tectonics and subsequent passive development are characterized by (1) a diachronous tectonic history, initially dominated by extensional rifting, followed by transform motion between two plates; (2) a complex history of thermally triggered vertical displacement (uplift and subsidence) due to the proximity (and sharp transition) of a passing, hot, oceanic spreading center; (3) a final stage of sedimentation strongly influenced by the inherited transform structural framework. An introductory section is followed by the site chapters. Three further sections covering principal results, cores and smear slides complete the report. These initial reports are bound together with those for Leg 159T (eastern Canary Basin). The two CD-ROMs cover Legs 158, 159 and 160, and log and core data for Leg 159.
