Abstract
Spanish for a Sustainable World I is an open educational resource designed for first-year university Spanish courses that integrates communicative language instruction with themes of environmental sustainability, social justice, and community engagement. The textbook develops students’ linguistic proficiency while fostering critical awareness of contemporary environmental and social challenges in the Spanish-speaking world.
Through authentic texts, multimedia materials, and task-based activities, students practice core grammatical structures and vocabulary in meaningful contexts related to climate change, sustainable practices, technology, and civic responsibility. The book emphasizes intercultural competence, encouraging learners to compare perspectives across communities and to reflect on their own roles in building sustainable futures.
As an openly licensed resource, Spanish for a Sustainable World I promotes equitable access to educational materials and allows instructors to adapt content to local and institutional needs. The text is suitable for hybrid, face-to-face, and online learning environments and supports learner-centered, inclusive pedagogy aligned with contemporary language-teaching standards.
