Abstract
Mobile offshore drilling units are ocean-going vessels used to drill, complete and workover wellbores in marine environments. The fleet has grown and evolved over time into larger more sophisticated rigs in response to operator’s movement into deeper water and more challenging environments. The fleet that exists today includes both old and new technologies built to wide ranging specifications. The purpose of this introductory chapter is to describe rig classifications and their technical specifications. We conclude with a description of the activity states through which a rig transitions over its lifecycle.
