Abstract
Rigs are built under a wide variety of designs, specifications and contracts at shipyards throughout the world. Market conditions, material and labor, design class and rig specifications, shipyard, and the time of construction are the primary factors that impact newbuild costs. Contract type, shipyard productivity, and exchange rate fluctuations also influence cost, but their impacts are more difficult to observe. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the factors that impact construction cost and provide empirical evidence to quantify their influence.
