Abstract
Rotating stall and surge are the two primary constraints for the performance of axial flow compressors. This paper analyzes the nonlinear phenomena of rotating stall and surge via the projection method. The local stability for each pair of the critical modes is studied, and characterized explicitly for the compressor model. The modal analysis for each pair of the critical modes offers new insight to the compressor stability, and may lead to new local feedback stabilization laws other than global stabilization as reported in [8].
