Abstract
Empire of Brutality: Enslaved People and Animals in the British Atlantic World, Christopher Michael Blakley’s first book and a revision of their 2019 dissertation, traces how British slaveowners distinguished between people, animals, and those persons who, through enslavement, occupied a position “in-between,” and how that process of dehumanization was molded by the material human-animal relationships that structured Atlantic slavery.
