Exploring Human-Building Energy-Related Actions Modeling and Simulation

Abstract

From the total electricity consumed in the US, a large share accounts for energy used in the buildings. Human energy-related actions in buildings significantly affect the building operation systems and the corresponding energy consumption. Simulation of these actions (e.g., occupants' presence, movement, and interactions with building energy systems) plays a vital role in predicting and evaluating the actual energy consumption in buildings. Therefore, it is essential to comprehensively review the existing literature on human-building energy-related actions from the perspective of simulation methods. The present paper carries out a systematic literature review of the existing studies focusing on inputs, outputs, and simulation techniques used to model each human-building energy-related action to define the current literature, existing gaps, and future research directions in this field. A total of 57 journal articles, published since 2005, are collected and reviewed to analyze the simulation methods along with simulation input and output parameters regarding human-building energy-related actions in the built environment. It was concluded that statistical and data-driven methods were the most popular methods of simulating human-building energy-related actions. Also, the results show that the Markov Chain technique is the most popular technique for simulating various human-building energy-related actions. This study summarized the most practical simulation methods and presented the future research potentials and direction in human-building energy-related behavior modeling and simulation.
