Abstract
The cyclodextrins are a group of cyclic oligosaccharides which are well known for their ability to form inclusion complexes with an array of molecules. These macrocycles are composed of a series of glucopyranose units attached by +ZZ4 linkages. This arrangement results in a torus conformation in which the cavity interior is lined with glycosidic oxygen and the cavity edges are composed of hydroxyl groups. Generally, the complexing ability of the cyclodextrins is a function of both the size and steric arrangement of the potential guest. Thus, the structure of the guest may either hinder or enhance complex formation. This stereospecificity allows for a number of interesting phenomena including fluorescence enhancement asymmetric catalysis and increased solubility in aqueous media.
