Abstract
Core-shell nanoparticles were prepared as encapsulating agents for fluorescent organic dyes. The nanoparticles were synthesized using a surfactant system to form templates to which a silica shell was connected. We studied the fluorescence of the dyes by steady state fluorescence and lifetime measurements, observing changes in the polarity and rigidity of the interior of the particles after the shell growth. Dye-free nanoparticles were used to sequester these dyes from aqueous suspensions, using their emission profiles to identify the final position of the probes in the particles. Finally, the formation of antenna systems was explored by attaching a donor dye to the surface of the particles.
