Abstract

Frontal polymerization is a mode of converting monomer into polymer via a localized propagating reaction zone. Such fronts can exist with free-radical polymerization and epoxy curing, and they allow the safe direct conversion of monomer into polymer without the use of solvent. The conditions for the existence of the free-radical thermal frontal polymerization and for isothermal frontal polymerization are considered. The factors affecting velocity, conversion, and molecular weight for thermal frontal polymerization are also considered. Both thermal and convective instabilities are examined as well as strategies for their elimination.
