Abstract

A method for spray ionization that uses laser-induced proton transfer to produce biomolecule ions has been recently developed. The technique combines the method of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) with aerosol liquid introduction. Aerosol MALDI laser spray ionization takes place on microcrystalline particles formed by vacuum drying liquid aerosols. The term laser spray is used to describe any spray ionization method that uses a laser as the primary means of ionization. Described in this paper is the aerosol MALDI technique and an important application to liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (LC-MS).
