Studies on the fluxes of dissolved forms of iron and manganese through the water-bottom interface on the northeastern shelf of the Black Sea

Abstract

Studies on the fluxes of dissolved forms of elements through the water-bottom interface in Golubaya (Rybatskaya) Bight of the Black Sea in September 2001 were carried out by using the direct technique of chamber experiments and by the indirect method of chemical analysis of interstitial waters. The fluxes of oxygen, hydrogen sulfide, and manganese were calculated. The fluxes of dissolved iron (II), iron (III), and total dissolved iron were calculated for the first time using optimized analytical procedures. The flux of total dissolved iron was found to be controlled mainly by that of iron (II). It was shown that, during a long-term chamber experiment (longer than one day), when a transfer from oxygenic to anoxic conditions occurred, the mechanism of the formation of the iron flux was changed.
