Abstract

Several strains of sulfur-oxidizing, filamentous, gliding bacteria of the size described for Beggiatoa alba have been examined to determine features of their morphology and physiology. The strains ranged in diameter from about 3.0 to 5.0 μm and deposited sulfur from sulfide and thiosulfate. All strains were similar, and a tight cluster that we consider to be B. alba was found. A taxonomic description of B. alba was produced. © 1984 Springer-Verlag.
