Abstract

The role of complement mediated immunologic pathways of ocular tissue injury in humans has not been determined. This report details quantitative immunochemical methods for the determination of complement components Cl, C4, and C3 in ocular fluids. In addition, the adaptation of a technique for the determination of low concentrations of immunoglobulins, electro immunodiffusion, in ocular fluids is reported. Tears were collected from normal subjects and patients with Mooren's ulcer, fungal ulcer, and graft reaction. Their study provides suggestive evidence that complement and immunoglobulin(s) may be active in the pathogenesis of ocular tissue damage, and demonstrates that currently available microassay techniques are applicable for further studies in this area.
