Abstract
Mortality rates from Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) in the U.S. declined significantly during the period 1968-1975. An improvement in mortality from this cause was recorded for each of the four sex-color groups, the trend being relatively more favorable for nonwhites. Age-adjusted rates for the population as a whole fell 19%, with even greater declines recorded for persons 35-74 yr of age. Total cardiovascular and All Causes death rates also improved markedly. The observed downturn in CHD beginning in 1968 represents a clear departure from the pattern of that disease since 1940. © 1978.
