Abstract
To the Editor: Dr. Cooper, in the May 21 issue, provides an excellent summary of available data on the trend of rising rates of coronary heart disease in the Soviet Union, paralleling those found in other developed countries.* After reporting this excellent research, the author adds a political and economic tract that is totally unsupported by the evidence presented. The author apparently makes two assumptions: that socialist economies will control production and marketing to prevent mass threats to public health — such as cigarettes and animal-fat-rich diets — from becoming a problem, and that capitalistic economies cannot do so.
