Abstract
Conditions affecting the hyperosmotic infiltration of antigens into channel catfish were examined using bovine serum albumin as a model antigen. A two-step procedure involving a 1-min presoak in 3% NaCl and a 30-s immersion in antigen resulted in maximum antigen uptake with minimal handling time. Maximum serum antigen levels at 27°C occurred immediately after immersion while maximum serum antigen levels at 16°C occurred at 30 min post-infiltration. Due to the rapidity of uptake, the gills are postulated as the primary site of antigen uptake in the channel catfish. Anesthetics were ineffective in increasing antigen uptake, and in fact had the opposite effect. © 1984.
