Abstract
A novel MOF-on-MOF ([plant essential oils@γ-CD MOF]/ZIF-8) strategy was established in this work, in which a cyclodextrin metal–organic framework (γ-CD MOF) loaded with plant essential oils (cinnamon and oregano oils, COEO) was combined with zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) to produce ([COEO@γ-CD MOF]/ZIF-8) for the removal of bacteria and dyes from bacterial staining wastewater. Adsorption isotherm and kinetic studies showed that [COEO@γ-CD MOF]/ZIF-8 could adsorb methylene blue (MB) by monolayer chemisorption with a Qmax of 111.6 mg/g. No bacterial colonies grew on plates treated with [COEO@γ-CD MOF]/ZIF-8, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed a disruption of E. coli and S. aureus structures. This work offers a simple and green method for treating bacterial staining wastewater in microbiology labs.
