Abstract
Electrospun nanofibers incorporated with antimicrobial agents have been produced with antimicrobial capability against a wide range of microorganisms. These nanofibers show promising applications in filtration, wound-dressing materials, protective textiles, tissue scaffolds, and biomedical devices. A comprehensive review is presented on current research and development activities of electrospun nanofibers incorporated with different antimicrobial agents. The effects of loading antimicrobial agents on the characteristics of precursor solutions with different polymer systems and properties of resultant electrospun nanofibers are summarized. The antimicrobial mechanism of selected antimicrobial agents and different methods on maximizing antimicrobial performance of electrospun nanofibers are also discussed.
