Abstract
In this study, a companion piece to a previous examination of children's playground equipment buyer perspectives, we investigate what children's playground equipment manufacturers think about using treated wood. The research objectives were to ascertain children's playground equipment manufacturer attitudes and preferences for using treated wood relative to alternative fabrication materials and to gauge their level of awareness regarding treated wood. The sample frame for the study was a census of all 188 U.S. playground equipment manufacturers. Minimization of chemicals and health risks are the most important criteria to respondents when considering the materials they use to manufacture children's playground equipment, Although multiple materials can be used in outdoor playground equipment fabrication, 48 percent of respondents use treated wood, 67 percent use plastic, and 56 percent use steel. © Forest Products Society 2005.
