Abstract
The wood products industry in Iran is facing a number of challenges that hinder its success in domestic and export markets. Most of Iran's 7.3 million hectares of forests are found in the North where illegal logging and smuggling are serious problems, with an estimated 2.0 million m3 illegally harvested annually. As a result of limited production of solid wood and high domestic demands exports are negligible in Iran. Lack of application of formal marketing and marketing research methods to evaluate opportunities in domestic markets also pose challenge for the wood poducts sector in Iran. Basic marketing principles such as identifying customer needs and manufacturing to meet these needs, understanding and taking advantage of supply chain opportunities are rarely used by the sector. Despite these challenges, the wood products industry has the potential to improve and grow, with the help of an improving economy and support from academic institutions and government.
