Abstract
Objective: To summarize the study of peptide YY (PYY) in obesety at home and abroad to further understand the mechanism of PYY, and provide the strong theoretic evidence for clinical medication. Data sources: An online search of Medline database was applied with the key words of "pyy, food intake", to identify related articles published between January 1980 and December 2005 in English. Meanwhile, Chinese articles of relationship between PYY and losing weight published between January 2003 and December 2005 wee identified on China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CHKI) with the keywords of "pyy, appetide": Study selection: The literatures related to pyy and its mechanism as well as aimed articles were selected. Articles recently published or issued in authoritative journals were involved. Articles associated with repetitive researches or reviews were excluded. Data extraction: Totally 26 articles were collected, and 7 were adopted based on the criteria. Other literatures were deleted. Data synthesis: PYY was an important gut hormone synthesized and secreted by the gastrointestinal tract. Peripheral administration of PYY 3-36, one of the circulating forms of PYY, was known to inhibit food intake. This anorexigenic effect was masked by stress inhibition of gastrointestinal tract. Conclusion: Evidence suggests that PYY3-36 acts via the hypothalamic Y2 receptor. Levels of the hormone PYY3-36 are low in overweight volunteers and can provide an important therapeutic avenue in the quest to combat the obese problems.
